Alright, let’s dive into my experience with the University of North Florida (UNF) Psychology program. Buckle up, it’s a bit of a journey!

So, it all started when I decided I wanted to understand people better. I mean, really understand what makes them tick. UNF had a decent reputation for its psychology department, and Jacksonville’s a pretty chill city, so I applied. Got in, thankfully!
First couple of semesters were your typical intro stuff. You know, General Psychology, Statistics (ugh, that one was rough), and Research Methods. Honestly, I almost bailed during Statistics. But I stuck with it, found a good study group, and somehow scraped by.
Then came the fun part – the specialized courses! I took everything that sounded even remotely interesting: Abnormal Psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, even a class on Forensic Psychology (thanks, crime shows!).
One thing I really appreciated about UNF’s program was the emphasis on research. They really pushed us to get involved. I ended up volunteering in a professor’s lab that was studying the effects of social media on self-esteem. It was a lot of grunt work at first – coding data, running participants through experiments – but I learned so much. I even got to co-author a paper that got published! That was a huge confidence booster.

Senior year was all about the capstone project. We had to design and conduct our own research study. It was stressful, but also incredibly rewarding. I chose to investigate the relationship between mindfulness and test anxiety in college students. Lots of late nights in the library, let me tell you. But finally seeing the results come in and presenting my findings to the class was a real accomplishment.
Here’s a quick rundown of some of the key takeaways:
- Get involved in research early. Seriously, it’s the best way to learn and make connections with professors.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Psychology can be tough, especially the quantitative stuff.
- Take advantage of internship opportunities. UNF has partnerships with a bunch of local organizations.
- Network, network, network! Go to conferences, join student organizations, and talk to your classmates.
Overall, my experience at UNF was great. Did it prepare me for a specific career? Not exactly. But it gave me a solid foundation in psychological principles, research skills, and critical thinking. It’s up to you to build on that foundation and figure out what you want to do with it.
After graduation, I ended up working in market research for a few years, which surprisingly used a lot of what I learned. Now, I’m working as a UX researcher, which is even more psychology-focused. So, it all kind of worked out in the end.
If you’re thinking about studying psychology at UNF, I’d say go for it. Just be prepared to work hard, be curious, and be open to exploring different career paths.
