Okay, so I’ve been messing around with the idea of minoring in psychology, and I wanted to share my whole thought process and what I ended up doing. It all started because, well, I’m kind of interested in how people tick, you know?

Initially, I contemplated whether it would actually be useful for my future. I mean, I’m not planning on becoming a therapist or anything. My major is totally different, something in the tech field. So, the big question was: would a psych minor actually help me, or would it just be a bunch of extra classes?
Diving into Research (aka Googling a Lot)
First, I hit up Google. I typed in stuff like “is a minor in psychology useful” and “benefits of a psychology minor.” I found a bunch of articles and forum posts. Some people were saying it’s super helpful for understanding people in any field, others were like, “Meh, it depends.”
- Some folks highlighted that it helps with communication and teamwork.
- Others mentioned it could be good for marketing or human resources.
- And of course, there were a few who said it wouldn’t make much of a difference unless I went further with psychology.
Talking to Real People
Next, I decided to get some real-world opinions. I talked to my academic advisor. She was pretty neutral, basically saying it could be beneficial but wasn’t essential. Then, I chatted with a couple of older students who had minored in psych. One loved it, saying it helped her understand her coworkers better. The other was kind of indifferent, saying he didn’t really use it much.
Weighing the Pros and Cons
After all that, I sat down and made a good old-fashioned pros and cons list.

- Pros: Better understanding of people, improved communication skills, maybe a slight edge in some job fields.
- Cons: Extra coursework, might not be directly relevant to my career goals, could delay graduation if I wasn’t careful.
The Verdict (and What I Did)
So, after a lot of back and forth, I finally decided to go for it. I enrolled to take a few introductory psychology classes, like psych 101.
I figured, worst-case scenario, I learn some interesting stuff, and best-case scenario, it actually helps me out down the line. And at the time, I’m enjoying it, the coursework, that is! Taking a psych minor.
It is still early, I will see how things go and make future changes to my class enrollment.
