Okay, so today I decided to dive into the medulla, you know, that part of the brainstem we learned about in AP Psychology way back when. I wanted to really understand its function, not just memorize it for a test.

I started by searching online. I watched some videos and read some articles, just to refresh my memory. It was all pretty basic stuff – the medulla controls autonomic functions, things you don’t even think about.
My Simple Experiment
I am thinking to feel it in action.
- First, I sat down and took a few deep breaths, trying to focus on my breathing and heartbeat.
- Then, I started doing some light exercise – just some jumping jacks to get my heart rate up a bit.
- I paid close attention to how my breathing changed. It got faster and deeper, naturally.
- I focused the feel of my heart, It’s a good way to feel my heartbeat
After that, I sat back down and focused on slowing my breathing down. I could feel my heart rate gradually returning to normal. It was a little thing, but I could practically feel my medulla doing its job, keeping everything in balance without me even having to think about it.
Finally I realized that the medulla is like the body’s silent autopilot, making sure the essential stuff runs smoothly. And, AP Psych wasn’t so useless after all!
