Okay, so I was messing around online the other day, trying to figure out the best places to study psychology in Florida. I mean, it’s Florida, right? Sunshine, beaches, and… well, apparently some decent psych programs too.

First thing I did was hit up Google, obviously. Typed in “top psychology colleges florida” and just started clicking on everything that looked remotely official. College rankings sites, university websites, even a couple of random blogs popped up. Spent a good hour just skimming, trying to get a general feel for what’s out there.
Then I started making a list. Just a simple one in Google Docs, nothing fancy. I jotted down the names of the schools that kept appearing in those “top 10” lists. University of Florida, Florida State, University of Central Florida… the usual suspects, you know?
Next step: Deep dive on the individual programs. I went to each university’s website and dug around for their psychology department. I was looking for a few key things: what kind of degrees they offered (bachelor’s, master’s, PhD), what the research areas were, and who the faculty members were. I’m talking seriously clicking through staff directories, reading faculty bios, even checking out their published papers (okay, I mostly just skimmed the abstracts).
I also tried to get a sense of the “vibe” of each program. Like, was it super competitive? More focused on research or clinical practice? Did they have a strong sense of community? This part was trickier, but I tried to read student reviews and browse forums where people were talking about their experiences.

Here’s where things got a little more hands-on. I actually reached out to a couple of people I know who are either studying psychology or know people who are. A former colleague’s sister is doing her master’s at UCF, so I shot her a message on LinkedIn and asked about her experience. Another friend has a cousin who’s a professor at FSU, so I asked him to put me in touch. Networking, baby!
- UCF (University of Central Florida): Heard really good things about their clinical psychology program. Apparently, it’s pretty competitive to get into, but the faculty are super supportive and the research opportunities are amazing.
- UF (University of Florida): Obviously, a top-tier school. Their psychology department is huge, and they have a ton of different research areas. Might be a good option if you’re not sure what you want to specialize in yet.
- FSU (Florida State University): From what I gathered, FSU has a strong focus on social and personality psychology. Their campus is beautiful, and the city of Tallahassee seems like a fun place to live.
My Takeaways
Honestly, all three schools seemed like solid options. It really just depends on what you’re looking for in a program. If you want a big, research-focused university, UF might be the best choice. If you’re more interested in clinical practice, UCF could be a better fit. And if you’re drawn to social and personality psychology, FSU is definitely worth considering.
The biggest thing I learned? Do your research! Don’t just rely on rankings and online reviews. Talk to people, visit the campuses if you can, and really try to get a feel for which program is the right fit for you. Good luck!
