My Dive into UAH Psychology Stuff
Okay, so I got curious about the psychology program over at UAH, the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Wasn’t really planning a degree change or anything, just poking around, you know? Sometimes you just wanna see how different places handle subjects you’re interested in.

First thing I did, obviously, was hit up their website. Spent a good hour just clicking through the psychology department pages. You get the usual stuff – faculty list, course descriptions, degree requirements. Standard university website fare, really. I tried looking for what makes them tick, their specific angle or focus.
Found they split things between a BA and a BS, which is pretty common. The BS seemed more geared towards research, heavy on the stats and methods, while the BA felt broader. I remember thinking, “Alright, typical setup.” Didn’t see anything super unique jump out immediately in the basic structure.
Then I started digging into the faculty profiles. That’s usually where you find the interesting bits, right? See what kind of research people are actually doing. Saw names pop up working on things like:
- Cognitive psychology – how people think, memory, that kind of thing.
- Some social psychology research, looking at group behavior.
- Clinical aspects seemed present too, focusing on mental health topics.
- Saw mentions of human factors/engineering psychology, which caught my eye. That’s about designing things – tools, websites, systems – to work better with how people’s minds operate.
I spent some time trying to find specific lab pages or recent publications. This part got a bit tricky. Some professors had decent info linked, others… not so much. It felt a bit scattered. You kind of had to piece things together yourself rather than finding a central hub showcasing all the cool projects.

Honestly, it felt a bit like detective work. I’d find a faculty member, see their listed interests, then maybe have to do a separate search to find their latest papers or projects. It wasn’t all laid out on a silver platter, which I guess is fair, academia can be like that.
I was particularly trying to get a feel for the undergraduate research opportunities. They mentioned them, sure, but getting concrete details on how students get involved, what projects are actively recruiting undergrads right now… that info felt less accessible from the outside looking in. You probably have to be a student there, talking directly to professors, which makes sense.
So, after a couple of evenings spent browsing and searching around, what did I walk away with? Well, UAH definitely has a psychology department doing varied work. The human factors angle seemed potentially interesting, given Huntsville’s engineering focus. But getting a deep, clear picture of their unique research vibe or the day-to-day student research experience just from the public-facing info? That was tougher than I expected. It felt solid, standard, but didn’t scream a unique, loudly broadcast identity from the website alone.
My takeaway was basically, looks like a decent, comprehensive program, but you’d really need to talk to people there – students, faculty – to get the real inside scoop on what makes it special or how to best plug into the research side. Just clicking around only got me so far.
