Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into tarot for a while, and I finally decided to take the plunge. I’d heard good things about the Zerner Farber deck, so I picked one up. Let me tell you, it’s been quite the experience so far!

First off, I unboxed it. The cards themselves are gorgeous. The artwork is this really cool, almost dreamy style. I spent a good hour just looking at each card, front and back, really trying to get a feel for them.
Getting Started: The Shuffle Struggle
Then came the shuffling. Oh boy. These cards are bigger than regular playing cards, and I have pretty small hands. It felt like I was wrestling an alligator! I dropped them like, five times. I eventually got the hang of it, kind of, but it’s definitely going to take some practice.
My First Reading (for Myself!)
- I decided to do a simple three-card spread for my first reading: Past, Present, and Future.
- I laid the cards out, and then started consulting the little guidebook that came with the deck.
- The guidebook is very useful.
It was…interesting. I’m not sure I totally understood everything, but some of it definitely resonated with me. Some of it felt a little confusing, but the more I read, the more it started to kind of click, at least a little bit.
Next Steps: More Practice!
I did a few more practice readings, just for myself, trying out different spreads I found online (not actual website, just spreads others talked about ). I’m still very much a beginner. I’m definitely going to keep practicing, maybe try reading for a friend soon. It’s all a bit overwhelming, but in a good way. It’s like learning a new language, a visual language.

I think this deck was a great choice.
